What is Network Security Scanning, and why scanning your network.

Network scanning is the second phase after network footprinting, and prior to network enumeration as will be mentioned. In this phase, after the network intruder footprints your network, he/she will start making use of these bulk assessments.  Then the network attacker will now focus on most promising avenues of entry.

"Network scanning is a procedure for identifying active hosts on a network, either for the purpose of attacking them or for network security assessment. Network scanning procedures, such as ping sweeps and port scans, return information about which IP addresses map to live hosts that are active on the Internet and what services they offer. Another network scanning method; inverse mapping, returns information about what IP addresses do not map to live hosts; this enables an attacker to make assumptions about viable addresses. "

Network Scanning is one of three components of intelligence gathering for a network attacker. In the network footprinting phase, the network attacker creates a profile of the target organization, with information such as: its domain name system (DNS) and e-mail servers, and its IP address range.

In the network scanning phase; the network attacker finds information about the specific IP addresses that can be accessed over the Internet, their operating systems, the system architecture, and the services running on each computer on the network. In the network enumeration phase, the network attacker gathers information such as: network user and group names, routing tables, and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) data.” Network scanning as defined in whatis.com.

How to prevent intruders from scanning your network?

Our network security team will detect the network threats through our Intrusion Detection System (IDS) & Firewall, and will take the essentials methods towards preventing any future threats to your network.
